Surface dressing and sealing

Maintaining and protecting the road substance

Surface dressing and sealing can be used to replace the uppermost wearing layer of the asphalt surface.
At the same time, the road surface is sealed to protect against the effects of moisture, the grip of the surface is improved and hazards due to surface spray and aquaplaning are reduced.

Aggregates with a different lightness or colour can also improve the identification and visibility conditions of the section of road.

The surface dressing method enables large areas to be worked and allows the roads to be re-opened to traffic as quickly as possible.

The schäfer-technic surface dressing and sealing range includes the right equipment for every form of surface dressing.

Our OB-Vario surface dressing machines spray and spread large quantities with precise dosing. The RZA-Vario repair trains enable individual repair tracks to be worked very precisely. Our SR bitumen sprayers offer the largest working width of up to 7 m. ST spreaders round off the range.

The choice of machine type depends on the substrate, the type of tender, the method to be used and, last but not least, the operator’s preference. We will be happy to advise you.

Spraying and spreading with combination machines

The schäfer-technic OB-Vario and RZA-Vario deliver high quality surface dressing thanks to combined use of spraying and spreading functions. The chippings are spread in binding agent that is still tempered, which increases the quality of the surface dressing.

Precision dosing prevents excessive chipping quantities. Machines with rear axle application rule out material being picked up by the tyres. This reduces loose chippings to a minimum.

Types of surface dressing

Different forms of surface dressing are suitable depending on requirements. 4 different types of surface dressing are common in Germany:

OB-eA

Single surface dressing:
A) Spraying - B) Spreading
C) Rolling

Suitable for surfaces with no special requirements.

OB-dA

Surface dressing with double spreading:
A) Spraying - B) Spreading
C) Spreading - D) Rolling

Different sized gravel layers interlock with one another. Suitable for road surfaces with high stress.

OB-dO

Double surface dressing:
A) First layer rolled B) Second spraying
C) Second spreading - D) Second rolling

The first layer is designed to stabilise the substrate, e.g. due to thinning or cracks. Suitable for repairing traffic routes with definite signs of damage.

OB-vA

Surface dressing with initial spreading:
A) Spreading - B) Spraying
C) Spreading - D) Rolling

Suitable for surfaces with partial binding agent enrichment.
